Experiences on the Galapagos Islands

I am currently staying in the Galapagos Islands, a truly magical place full of wildlife and natural wonders. The weather where I am, on the coast, is Mediterranean, with cool and rainy winters but very hot and dry summers.

I am participating in the Giant Tortoise Conservation Volunteering Program, whose main purpose is to protect the Galapagos Giant Tortoises, an endangered species that plays a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem of the islands.

So far, I have had the chance to do many activities that made me feel more connected to this mission. I helped protect the giant tortoises, participated in education and interaction with tourists and students alongside park rangers, and gained hands-on experience in wildlife conservation. I also immersed myself in the local culture, sharing moments with the community, and contributed to the physical maintenance of the Breeding Center to ensure a safe environment for the tortoises.

In the next few days, I plan to focus on caring for and feeding the tortoises, supporting the cleaning and upkeep of the center, and exploring the natural wonders of the Galapagos.

From my experience, I would like to share some recommendations that I believe are essential if we really want to protect these unique islands. First, helping protect the Galapagos Giant Tortoise is fundamental because they are not only a symbol of the islands but also key to maintaining ecological balance. Second, education and interaction are powerful tools; by teaching tourists, students, and even locals, we create awareness and promote responsible tourism. Third, gaining conservation experience is important not just for volunteers like me but for forming future professionals who will continue this fight. Fourth, immersing ourselves in the local culture helps build strong relationships with the community, and together conservation becomes more effective. Finally, maintaining and caring for the Breeding Center facilities is essential to guarantee that these animals have a safe and healthy space to develop.
