Wildlife and Heritage Conservation Volunteer Program in Croatia - Kuterevo

When I stayed in Kuterevo, I was accommodated in a traditional local house right next to the sanctuary. I shared a simple yet cozy room with another volunteer, and although the space was modest, it had everything I needed—bedding, towels, a shared bathroom, a common area, and a kitchen where we could prepare our meals.

The facilities were basic but sustainable, and one of the most interesting parts was using the ecological dry toilet with sawdust compost. At first it felt different, but I soon appreciated how this eco-friendly system really reflected the values of the sanctuary and showed us how to live in harmony with the environment.

The weather was also part of the experience. Being on the Adriatic coast, I got to see how the Mediterranean climate shapes daily life. Winters were cool and rainy, with temperatures around 5–10°C (41–50°F), while the summer months were hot and dry, often reaching 26–30°C (79–86°F). Living with these conditions taught me to adapt, whether by layering up during colder days or enjoying the warmth and outdoor activities in summer.

Purpose: Conserve wildlife & the environment.

Some activities I did while volunteering:

  1. During my time at the sanctuary, I had the opportunity to take part in several meaningful activities. One of the most rewarding experiences was caring for the animals, where I helped look after the bears and assisted in maintaining their habitats to ensure they lived in safe and healthy conditions.
  2. I also joined efforts in sanctuary and forest maintenance, preserving wild food sources and keeping the forest in good shape so the animals could remain close to their natural environment. Another valuable experience was collecting and preserving wild herbs and fruits. I learned traditional techniques not only to store them for personal use, but also to provide food for the animals.
  3. One of the most interesting tasks was water collection, where I discovered traditional Croatian methods to gather water naturally, something that benefits both people and wildlife. Finally, I contributed to cooking and maintaining the common areas, which was a great way to share daily life with other volunteers and strengthen the sense of community.

The following are activities that I will do in the following days:

In the next few days, I plan to be actively involved in several activities at the sanctuary.

  1. I will help with animal care, assisting in the upkeep of habitats for bears and other animals. I want to ensure that they remain healthy and comfortable in their environment.
  2. I will also participate in building and handiwork, supporting tasks such as painting, cleaning, and helping construct new accommodations for future volunteers. I’m excited to contribute to improving the sanctuary’s facilities.
  3. Additionally, I plan to take part in sanctuary and forest maintenance, helping to preserve wild food sources, maintain the forest, and ensure that the animals can continue to live in their natural surroundings.

Now I will give you some actions we can take to take care of the environment:

1. Reforest with native plants

I joined reforestation efforts and saw how vital native species are. Planting them ensures food and shelter for wildlife.

2. Use traditional water-saving methods

I learned old techniques to collect water naturally. Applying them helps save resources and respect nature’s cycles.

3. Preserve herbs and wild foods

Harvesting and storing herbs taught me to avoid waste and live more sustainably.

4. Support wildlife conservation

Caring for rescued animals showed me every species matters. I want to keep helping similar projects.

5. Promote environmental education

Sharing what I learned is key. By spreading awareness, I can inspire others to protect the environment.
